Electrical contractors throughout Utah – and the entire US – need to be very careful about making sure that all code requirements are being fulfilled when working on small, medium, or large-scale projects. While electrical service and repair for residential and commercial sectors can be more lenient, the same cannot be said for skyscrapers and industrial buildings.
The National Electrical Code is particularly important as NEC compliance isn’t just for the sake of governance but also ensures safety for all parties involved. It also encompasses conserving energy and ensuring the electrical systems are efficient.
So let’s take a look at how Skyline Electric ensures NEC compliance when working on any project. It involves a multi-faceted approach and shows just how important it is that electricians are careful every step of the way.
Skyline’s Compliance & Enforcement Process
The Design Phase
Compliance begins at the very roots of our electrical service. Here, electrical architects, engineers, designers, and other staff members decide a time and place to meet (or conduct an online meeting) so everyone can understand the project’s intent.
Goals are decided upon, and all applicable NEC standards are identified. The design is finalized afterward, keeping in mind all the necessary protocols.
Filing for A Permit
The design team needs to create blueprints submitted with the relevant authority, which shall be reviewed based on all applicable standards. All changes, if any, are implemented. Electrical contractors also submit the compliance forms, worksheets, and blueprints to present a complete picture.
Plan Check
Once approved, the building department examiner verifies the plan from start to finish, including the building infrastructure. The department field inspectors may visit the site to verify that everything is proceeding according to the plan submitted.
Construction & Implementation of Electrical System
As the construction process begins, general and electrical contractors must make sure they stick to the approved plan. At this point, the electrical system is installed completely and tested.
Acceptance & Commissioning Based on NEC Standards
Once the electrical system has been completely implemented, the contractor inspects the building completely to ensure no unapproved elements are in the system. Once done, the same is communicated to the inspection authorities, verifying and accepting the building’s infrastructure.
Based on the scale and nature of the project, a public announcement may be made, or a simple certificate of compliance may be issued.
Operation & Maintenance
Once operations begin, the building and systems in the building must be operated and maintained properly. This is where the energy conservation clauses of NEC need to be implemented and tested, such as automatic lights, LEDs, and more. Based on the contract, fixture replacement may also be the contractor’s responsibility.
